What is a doula? What are the advantages of hiring one?
2
A doula is a trained, nonmedical professional who provides continuous physical, emotional, and informational support to individuals and families before, during, and after childbirth. Doulas focus on comfort measures, advocacy, and evidence-based education so birthing people and their partners can make informed decisions and feel supported throughout the perinatal period. Services commonly include prenatal visits to create a birth plan and discuss preferences, continuous labor support (positioning, breathing, comfort measures, and encouragement), postpartum assistance with newborn care and breastfeeding, and referrals to community resources.
Advantages of having a doula
Lower cesarean and intervention rates: Randomized studies show continuous labor support is associated with a reduced chance of cesarean birth and fewer medical interventions such as forceps or vacuum extraction.
Shorter labor and improved outcomes: Labor tends to be shorter and more efficient with continuous support, which can reduce maternal exhaustion and improve satisfaction.
Better pain management and reduced need for medication: People supported by doulas often report less intense pain and may use fewer epidurals or other pain medications.
Higher rates of breastfeeding initiation and duration: Postpartum doula support increases early breastfeeding success and helps families overcome common challenges.
Improved maternal mental health: Continuous emotional support can decrease the risk of postpartum depression and anxiety, and improve overall postpartum adjustment.
Enhanced partner involvement: Doulas support partners in their role, offering guidance on comfort measures and helping them actively participate in the birth experience.
Personalized care and advocacy: Doulas help translate medical information, advocate for the birthing person’s preferences, and collaborate with clinical teams to support a safer, more respectful experience.
Key statistics
Continuous labor support is associated with a 28% decrease in the likelihood of cesarean birth in randomized controlled trials.
People with doula support are 31% less likely to use pain medication and 9% less likely to use any regional analgesia in some meta-analyses.
Use of a doula is linked to a 15% increase in spontaneous vaginal birth.
Postpartum doula and breastfeeding support can increase breastfeeding initiation and exclusivity rates in the early postpartum period by 20–50% in multiple studies. (Statistics are drawn from aggregated systematic reviews and meta-analyses on continuous labor support; individual study results vary.)

What makes you different?
3
Experience, confidence, and a solid medical background grounded in calm, practical care. I have given birth seven times and endured four miscarriages, bringing both clinical knowledge and personal understanding to my support. I have breastfed each of my children for periods ranging from two months up to eighteen months. I am grandma to three absolutely fabulous grandchildren. It has been through being a grandma that I have learned so much in recent years. I have learned new ways based on the research around attachment and child development. I continue to learn all the time.
